The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration uses two main criteria to evaluate how safe a vehicle is. They evaluate the crashworthiness, which is how well the occupants are protected in a crash. They also evaluate the mitigation, which is how well a vehicle minimizes the damage that is done during an accident. They do this by testing a vehicle in a crash test. The crash tests assesses how well a vehicle does in comparison to vehicles that are similar to it.

The NHTSA gives ratings from one to five. The safest vehicle will have a rating of five stars. You need a vehicle that has at least a four-star rating. Keep in mind that even though driver assistive technology does not impact the safety rating, you should still choose a vehicle that has those features. It can make your drives even safer.
